Mulberry has unveiled the latest chapter in its Mulberry Editions series, which features Irish-born, London-based Richard Malone, as part of the brand’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

Malone has reinterpreted two Mulberry bags that feature the iconic Postman’s lock for the limited-edition Mulberry x Richard Malone capsule collection: the Bays water, one of Mulberry’s most recognizable designs, and the Darley.

The collection, which was unveiled during Malone’s spring/summer 2022 show at the V&A Museum during London Fashion Week, combines Mulberry’s heritage with the designer’s own bold design language, drawing inspiration from early and mid-century bags.

The adaptability and longevity of luggage and travel bags were the starting point for the capsule, according to Mulberry in a press release, as well as Malone drawing inspiration from Mulberry’s archives, where he was struck by “the pragmatism, purpose, and quiet confidence of the designs,” and the way they could easily adapt to fit the demands of a busy lifestyle and slot seamlessly into a wardrobe for decades.

Malone has deconstructed the Bays water for the collection, bringing interior design details like pockets, piping, and serial numbered fobs to the bags’ exteriors. The Triangle Bays water and a cylindrical version, the Barrel Bag, were born from the reworking of this classic.

Malone also gives Mulberry’s signature hardware, the postman’s lock, a modern update by encasing it in leather, as seen on the Bays water and the Darley.

Mulberry rolls out he collaborates with Richard Malone

Mulberry is staying true to its long-term legacy of high-profile collaborations by collaborating with Richard Malone on the latest Mulberry Editions project. Sunday will be the official launch date for the app, which will be distributed globally in-store on Monday.

Mulberry’s popular Bays water and Darley bags have been “reimagined” by Malone for his limited-edition capsule. He “deconstructed the Bays water, transporting interior design details such as pockets, piping, and serial numbered fobs to the exterior of the bags”, taking inspiration directly from the brand’s archives. This collection contains one of the four unique Bays water styles (the Bays water in Bays water, the Bays water Mini, the Small Darley, and two new styles — the Triangle Bays water and the Barrel Bag) The set comes with a Coin Pouch and Key Fob as well.

The company commented that Malone is just as passionate about supporting British craftsmen and the environment as it is. The mulberry signature scotch grain fabric has been a key part of its collections for decades, and an eco-friendly version of that is being used across all the collection styles. “It is made from recycled cereal waste that is reworked into a lightweight, hard-wearing, and textured-looking material that looks and feels like leather.”

Richard Malone and Mulberry are launching their collaborative brand in London Fashion Week.

An eco-friendly version of Mulberry’s signature scotch grain material, which has been a key part of Mulberry collections for decades, is used across all styles to highlight both Mulberry and Malone’s commitment to British craftsmanship and sustainability. It’s now made of cutting-edge Bio-Synthetic materials, which turn inedible cereal waste into a hard-wearing, lightweight material that looks and feels just like the original textured leather. Any leather used on the straps and handles, for example, comes from Gold standard, environmentally certified tanneries.

The collection is a “celebration of function as much as form,” according to Mulberry, and is “pared-back yet impactful,” with geometric shapes evoking the architectural silhouettes that Malone is known for in his own collections.

The collection’s “punchy” color palette of blue, red, green, and white, inspired by post-modern and 1970s design, reflects the purity of the design.

“Collaborating with Mulberry feels like a natural fit for me – I really respect that they have meaningful conscious values and ambitious sustainability plans in place,” Richard Malone said in a statement.

“The entire process has been incredibly rewarding; Mulberry has been an incredible collaborator, allowing me complete creative freedom. This collection is all about function at its core: making really great bags that people will love and wear for years.”

“We are delighted to unveil Richard Malone’s contribution to the Mulberry Editions series,” said Thierry Andretta, Mulberry’s chief executive. Our shared passion for and commitment to our Made to Last values of quality and sustainability, combined with his innovative take on our design DNA and reinterpretation of two of our most beloved bags, make this a truly exciting moment for Mulberry as we celebrate our 50th anniversary.”

The Bays water, Mini Bays water, Small Darley, and two new styles, The Triangle Bays water and Barrel Bag, are part of the Richard Malone capsule collection, which also includes a Coin Pouch and Key Fob. On September 19, the collection will be available digitally on mulberry.com and in stores worldwide on September 20. Designer Priya Ahluwalia reimagined Mulberry’s Portobello Tote and an assortment of scarves in her signature vibrant aesthetic for the first Mulberry Edition designer collaboration, which launched in June. In November, Malone’s collection will be followed by a capsule designed by Nicholas Daley.
